compiling Gdal in Cygwin

Richard,

thanks for the tip. I didn't know this existed, and it will be very useful. Unfortunately it cannot seem to compile gdal, because a file called windows.h is missing. But it's still a useful compiler to have.

I recently discovered that the Microsoft .NET SDK (free download)
includes the vc compiler, nmake, etc.. I haven't tried to build GDAL
with it yet, but I think there is a very good chance that it will
work.
