Shapefile vs. DB connections

Another thing that can be done to significantly enhance the
performance of shapefiles to break them down into smaller shapefiles,
and then reference them in a TILEINDEX. Stephen Woodbridge's shp2tile
tool in combination with Frank's ogrtindex makes this a breeze:
