Point Layer?

Hello list,

 

I'm having difficulty creating a POINT layer.  Actually, I'm not sure I even
want a point layer.  I have a shape (shp) file that has approximately 50-75
points on it.  Each point represents a specific location on my map (maybe
that's obvious?)

 

Do I need to specify the layer as a POINT layer?  Do I need to specify a
SYMBOL?

 

Any ideas?
