Projecting TIF images

Hi everyone:
I am new to the MapServer world - I've used only ESRI products prior to
now. I just started a new job and have been tasked with MapServer related
work. I've been through some tutorials and documentation on the website,
but a problem I'm having is getting a GeoTIFF image in the same projection
as my other data. I have no access to ESRI products here. I need to get
the shapefile and TIF of the world overlapping - they are currently offset
somewhat - suggesting different projections. I downloaded the free
Quantum GIS and the layer's property pages in there indicated they are
both latlong, WGS84. Can anyone help?
I realize that you can 'project on the fly' by specifying the current
projection in the Layer Object, and the desired projection in the Map
Object, but my problem seems to be getting a handle on the current
projection. Do any of the MapServer tools/utilities allow you to get all
the projection and coordinate information?
Mark.
