tileindex format options

I'm setting up some time series satellite data (WCS) and am using the gdaltindex tool. I'm working on
a script that will automatically add a second column with the dates needed by mapserver, using the
shapelib tools. Is there another way of adding such a column at present, using a regular expression
for instance that extracts the date from the filenames?
