Shannon,

The "items" pointer is not supposed to be NULL.  That is why things
are crashing.  I don't know why it is NULL though.  I really think you
may need to submit a bug report with all the information (map file,
data, invocation, full traceback etc) to reproduce the problem so the
developers can track it down and fix it properly.
