specify elements returned from a WFS

Is there way of specifying which elements you want
returned from a WFS.

For example, after I do a describeFeatureType request
I see that the feature has 10 elements e.g  id, name,
area, perimeter, x_coord,y_coord, owner etc.

Is there way to write a getFeature request so that
only name, x_coord and y_coord are returned?
