ERROR 1: CREATE INDEX ON failed, no such layer

Hello
 
I'm trying to create Indexes on my .shp file but I'm stuck...
I'm trying to use this command:
 
ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" mynewshp.shp myshp.shp -sql "CREATE INDEX ON tablename USING fieldname"
 
and in my case it looks like this:
 
ogr2ogr -f "ESRI Shapefile" streets.shp streets_polyline.shp -sql "CREATE INDEX ON streets.shp USING street"
 
i know that I'm doing sth wrong but don't know what
 
"tablename" - what is it, is it the shp. file mapinfo tab. file??? I've no idea what else I could try to make it work
 
any advice?
