I believe it's used simply as a multiplier against the previous
cellsize. So, if the zoomfactor
is 2 then cells in the new extent will be 2 times larger, if -2 then
cells will be 2 times smaller.
That's how the CGI application does it anyway.

Can anyone tell me how the mapscript function zoompoint uses the
zoomfactor parameter to calculate the extent.
