MapServer/MapScript Installation Help : Newbie question

I'm trying to install MapServer and MapScript a shared hosting account with the following setup :

Linux Apache v1.3.33,  Perl 5.8.1,  Php 4.4.1

I've looked at the documentation and installation help system but haven't had any luck so far. Can somebody point me in the right direction please?
