what is the status of running Mapserver/GDAL on 64-bit systems?

I saw a thread by Bill Binko from sept 2005, but it did not come to any
conclusions.

Hi Bart,

I deployed MapServer and GDAL to 64 bit Xeon running SuSe, the only
problems I had were compiling the netCDF libraries, but even that worked
ok eventually.
