issue with classitem and tileindex...

I have a couple of county shapefiles where I've created a tileindex using
tile4ms.  When I render these with MS, things work fine until I set the
classitem, and then it can't find the classitem column on the shapefile (in
this case 'cfcc').

Is there something special you have to do to use a class item or label item
with a tileindex?
