multiple extent

hi list,
   
i'm using queryByAttribute in an application to find a street. a street might consists of 3 or 4 lines. if i want to zoom in to that street, how to get an extent for those lines? i've tried using oExtents = oShape->bounds, but it only returns an extent for a line.
   
also, i'm a bit confused about MapServer's keyword, FILTER and CLASSITEM. i guess FILTER is applied in the same time as the spatial data is rendered. does that give a performance improvement compared to CLASSITEM?
   
the more i know MapServer, the more questions come in :D
