I sounds like you are missing a TFW file. The TFW, or "World File"
defines the location of the upper left corner of the TIFF in terms of
the projetion, which is defined by the PRJ file. A GeoTIFF has that
information embeded in the header of the TIFF, but it doesn't sound
like you have a GeoTIFF because gdalinfo isn't finding any info.
