Okay, that indeed worked for a truetype symbol.  Thanks.

But do you know about a vector symbol?  That is slightly my preference here,
but I can't get any spacing to work.  If I try PATTERN (formerly STYLE, I
believe), it has no effect.  The symbol is repeated as before.  If I instead
try GAP, anything (either positive or negative) other than 0 (the presumed
default) causes the symbol to not even be drawn at all.
