Steve,

I had just tried adding an outline before I received this message.  It
helps, but at the expense of my coastline.  This is, however, not a
terrible issue because you can still see the detail as you zoom in further.

I remember reading about it awhile back in discussions about  alternative algorithms and recall it being prominent with vertical edges. Have you tried setting an outline color to the same value as your fill color? That may help.
