Oh, I forgot to mention that you should probably build internal 
overviews to speed up sampling. This is typically done like:

gdaladdo  average abc.tif 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256

this should improve performance went you need to resample the images 
based on scale. It will use more diskspace.
