<p>I know that this isn't completely freeware, but the Image Web Server
by Earth Resource Mapping (Australia) is a great tool for exactly
what you are talking about. IWS is only purchased for the server
side, tho. All of the plug-ins for browsers, apps (word, excel, photoshop)
and GIS tools (arcview, mapinfo) are free and available for download over
the web. It handles absolutely huge images - we have an example of a 400
GB mosaic of southern CA at 1 meter resolution - that you can interactively
browse in Virginia from a server in CA. They use the ECW compression
capability, which can be used to "dial-in" a compression rate.
<p>Pricing depends on file sizes and number of simultaneous clients.
The prices and max file sizes are:

<br>$25K 100GB
<br>$50K unlimited
<p>These prices <i>include</i> a copy of ERMapper, which you use to compress
the images. Note that the low-end version comes "free" with ERMapper.

<p>- Mutli-segmented intranet, Windows NT 4 domain servers

<br>be that good, at least initially (eg. ~1ghz, 768mb ram, IDE RAID)
<p>- the sysadmins are all mostly Win32 based, the *nix expertise is
<br>limited thus any *nix-based solution must be GUI and and should be
<br>WIMP friendly.
<p>- there is a non-trivial amount of ESRI inertia, thus for
<br>Mapserver to win out over ArcIMS there must be compelling
<br>arguments with pretty pictures.
<p>- there is a non-trivial amount of Microsoft inertia, thus more

<p>I have no idea what the actual demand on the server will be, but
<br>potentially a lot -- 595 computers spread over 21 subnets on the
