Sounds like the "type" of PNG is causing the problem.
Have a look at the properties (using gdalinfo) of the PNG image the wms
produces (use "curl" to get and save the image. Is it RGB?

layers such as roads. They look correct in the application’s map view.
But when I compose a printable map, these layers have a black background which
