Nicolas et al

I realise that some in the committe may not know me, so for those a
bulleted resume cum history:

- in the days Frank Warmerdam served on the board I had a discussion on how
OSGeo missed out by the way its marketing was done. Somehow, I did not get
any traction and left it.
- during the time Bart van der Eijnden served as Board member I again
proposed to the Board (asked by and communicated via Bart) to work on
proper strategic marketing. The reply we got was not quite what we
expected, though.
- this year I felt first hand as member of the LOC FOSS4G2016 in Bonn that
the LOC is reinventing the marketing wheel and thus spending too much
personal time. We cannot depend on any marketing help from OSGeo (and a
shabby mailinglist of 20+k is hilariously small, considering the world wide
impact our projects have), so Jody roped me in (he would make a great
fisherman!).
- Please be aware that the present committee has been dormant for 2 years,
judging from (the lack of) mailinglist, wiki and website activity

So why did I step up to the plate? While I:
- cannot code and will not ever learn how to, but are in awe of those that
can explain 'stuff' to me
- have no employer or business (anymore) benefitting from OSGeo work
- have not worked on OSGeo-projects otherwise
- am often frustrated to have next to no peers to talk to when it comes to
what community marketing is/can be (e.g. not only PR)

Well, because (in no particular order):
- open source in general has been my stamping ground for 15 odd years
- I grew into this community and the community grew on me
- it overlaps some of and faciliates my LOC Bonn involvement
- my earlier business and employer had overlapping activities with OSGeo
- I consider some as very good friends, who I can support in turn for their
help in the past/present/future
- I feel my more business related skills and experience complement the
abundance of technical abilities in the community
- it is a culture where I feel comfortable in (while remaining critical at
the same time ;-)

However, I ask:
- the committee, the Board and the community at large to either contribute
structurally (e.g. to the concept marketing proposal in the
wiki-marketing-discussion)
- Or show faith me in my skills and experience and provide additonal
feed-back, insights, experiences or just moral support whenever someone
feels obliged to
- and act upon the findings and to-do's

And to be a little bit Dutch:
- past & present inertia has raised the issue of irrelevance
- no effective strategy and marketing is scattering the scarce resources we
have
- if there were more people from the business side of open spatial involved
I welcome them full heartedly
- following procedures etc is all well and good, but it hamstrings in many
situations, so transparancy is what really counts

So bottom line:
- I am getting impatient as time is moving fast
- I am getting exasperated as I am
- I am getting frustrated with lask of progress
- I am getting fed up with raising the dead

If:
- I have to wait on the present Marketing committee (or what's left of it)
- I have to wait on a new committee (I do not exactly see people fighting
to get in)
- if I have to wait on getting things done (I cannot imagine software
development depending on quora's etc)

In order to:
- scratch my own itch
- be part of the solution instead of the problem
- get things moving forward

Then I rather pass and move on.
Well, so much for my pitch for the White House ;-)

(Sorry to see you leave Jeroen, but I know you have already too many things
on your hands ;-)

Regards, Marc
