Let me suggest to let Bibtex do this job. In our first GRASS book edition
we did it as above (driving me crazy), then I switched to Bibtex and
let the computer do the job.

To generate Bibtex citations, you can use for example CiteUlike.org
(there is even an OSGeo group: http://www.citeulike.org/group/10787)
