Yes please open it up,

The Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSgeo) has recently formed a
Australia/New Zealand local chapter and new groups are in formation
(gis.org.nz) which have a focus on vendor neutral GIS.

Although it's growing, I'd say New Zealand's geospatial community is too
small to support various branches, so the move to an open, vendor and
software neutral format will not only attract members of the community
who would have avoided the "ESRI" group in the past, it will also retain
users who may start to look elsewhere when budgets get tight or other
constraints prevent the use of certain software products.

Regards...Reuben

Good morning (just) to you all,

Hey so far we have had a poor response (probably due to my email box
being full....it's now clear) to the 3 options put up by committee which
will determine the future direction and make-up (not the Ma'a Nonu kind)
of our conferences.

Can you please email me asap with either

1.	No change, carry on as is
2.	An open ESRI Conference
3.	Move to a vendor-neutral, whole of sector GIS Conference

Have a say because it's your conference and your GIS community.

Subject: [gislist] The future of the NZ ESRI User Group
Conference - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

Is it time? Do we want to move to an open ESRI
Conference in New Zealand?

		Background

The NZ ESRI User Group Conference has run, more or less
in its current for (how many years?) years. Until recent years, the
conference was substantially underwritten, organised and run by Eagle
Technology Ltd and while there has always been a committee; their
involvement in conference organisation was minimal. Eagle controlled
the content of the conference; presentations and vendors/sponsors which
to date has seen the exclusion of any company selling products and/or
services that competed directly or indirectly with ESRI and/or eagle
Technology Ltd. The focus of the conference has been almost exclusively
on ESRI-based software. The current conference rules reflect this also.
For vendor/sponsors they state:

It is important to remember this conference has a focus
on ESRI software. Therefore exhibitors are reminded that other GIS
software products can not be promoted at this conference.

		And for papers:

If you are a business partner or consultant and you
intend to submit a paper abstract on a topic that involves a commercial
product or service of your company, the primary author of the paper
should be your client or customer. You may be the secondary author.

In the last few years the UG Committee has been much
more hands on determining what goes on at the Conference. Over the past
12-18 months there has been suggestions to broaden the scope of the
conference beyond the current narrow ESRI-based theme. This is a
reflection of the nature of many sites whose architecture now has a mix
of different applications and platforms.

Does the user group want the conference to reflect this
i.e. have non ESRI-GIS vendors attend plus presentation of solutions not
based on ESRI but that integrate with it i.e. MapInfo, Intergraph,
Smallworld etc?

Before anything changes the User Community needs to
discuss and carefully consider the options and if there was a proposed
change to the Conference format, that would need to be ratified at the
Conference AGM. It could also require a change to the User Group rules,
such as they are now and, if change is proposed, we would need some
logistics worked through with eagle Technology Ltd.

Can I ask that all the User group members discuss this
amongst themselves and forward specific thoughts/ideas/comments to (YOUR
NAME HERE with email address). The UG Committee will put these into
options for debate and if appropriate, ratification at the AGM.

So what are the options? Here are three possibilities
(In no particular order and a non-exclusive list):

		1.	No change, carry on as is
		2.	An open ESRI Conference
		3.	Move to a vendor-neutral, whole of sector GIS
Conference

		No Change:

We continue with the conference largely how it is now.
We exclude vendors selling software and/or services that compete with
ESRI and/or eagle Technology Ltd. Presentations continue to be by
users, are exclusively ESRI based and exclude commercial companies.

		An Open ESRI Conference:

The Netherlands ESRI Conference follows this model.
While it is substantially an ESRI affair, it is open to other, competing
GIS companies i.e. MapInfo, Intergraph and Smallworld (plus many others)
all have a presence as do pretty much any company wishing to promote
their products or services. Attendance is also open to anyone. Papers
still tend to have an ESRI component but with much broader content i.e.
Open source map servers serving ArcSDE data, integrating ESRI with
Intergraph Geomedia, MapInfo, Smallworld or AutoCAD, service oriented
architectures etc.

Whole of sector, vendor-neutral GIS Conference:

The various user communities (ESRI, MapInfo, Intergraph,
Smallworld - possibly others) collaborate to run a
vendor/software-neutral, whole of sector GIS Conference. This could
offer various sponsorship packages similar to the ones we have at the
ESRI conference.

Vendors would likely pay more for these as the
conference could well be attracting 500-600 plus attendees.
Presentations would also be software independent, based solely on their
merit/interest/usefulness to the wider community.

Such a conference could well attract a higher calibre of
Keynote speaker. Software-based streams could be incorporated into a
three of four day conference i.e. on a particular morning/afternoon or
day, ESRI, MapInfo, Intergraph, Smallworld have their own software
specific streams, i.e. ESRI would be showing off the latest and
greatest in ArcGIS 10.2!!

Put the thinking caps on, get talking, emailing,
blogging etc. While the committee will monitor the discussion with a
view to bring this to the conference AGM, if anyone has some specific
ideas/feedback please forward this to:
