Hi all,

I would like to start a discussion about the relevance of altmetrics for the OSGeo communities.

In a nutshell, altmetrics are (according to Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altmetrics) "non-traditional metrics proposed as an alternative to more traditional citation impact metrics, such as impact factor and h-index."

There are already several tools available (http://altmetrics.org/tools/) to record and map impact of ones work an a variety of dissemination channels (blogs, github, etc.)

As an example, here's an altmetrics score of a paper by my former colleague Marco Tullney of TIB:

The colored "altmetrics dooughnut" (upper left) indicates the reuse / distribution of this article.

With OSGeo continuing to grow and diversify, this could be an interesting concept to track the impact OSGeo people have by blogging/coding/documenting and also (this could be potentionally new & interesting) how things in OSGeo are actually tied together as part of the mixing bowl culture.

Would this topic merit to be investigated by us ?

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

best,
Peter
