Hi Open Geoscience list,
I'm reaching out to you because of an opportunity (with a deadline of April 15) which might be of interest for several OSGeo communities:

The largest annual European Geoscience conference (Europen Geoscience Union: EGU, about 16.000 attendees, Details about OSGeo/EGU here: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/EGU) in their new format called "Data Help Desk", which will be an "ask me anything" opportunity for participants to learn about or ask questions about scientific data, but also Open Source software, as part of the Open Science paradigm.

Because of Corvid-19, the EGU General Assembly (4 -8 May) will be a massive virtual event for attendees all around the globe. Details here:
https://www.egu2020.eu/
https://egu2020.eu/sharing_geoscience_online/sharing_geoscience_online.html

The Data Help Desk will take place in parallel to EGU 2020. It will also be a virtual event, running for five days (4 -8 May). Each day of the Data Help Desk will have a particular topic. So there will be a open source software day for which volunteers are needed.

In my opinion, it would be awesome if folks from a large number of OSGeo projects could participate by giving presentations and answering questions.

For coordination among OSGeo projects and groups, this OSGeo wiki page can be used:

I propose that we discuss and coordinate volunteer efforts by the Open Geoscience Community in this list.

Details about the Data Help Desk call for volunteers:

--- snip ---

Volunteer by 4/15 to be a Data Expert for the next Virtual Data Help Desk, to be hosted during the week of EGU2020: Sharing Geoscience Online (May 4th-May 8th, 2020). Just like the in-person events, this Virtual Data Help Desk, which is a program of EGU, the American Geophysical Union (AGU), and the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), will connect researchers with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain to share skills and techniques that will help further research and make data and software open and FAIR.

YOU can volunteer to be a Data Expert who contributes in one or both of the following ways:
1. Answer Data Questions Virtually (monitor question forums, likely Twitter and Slack, and answer where you can for the week of May 4th)
2. Share a short recorded demo of a tool or resource
To volunteer, please complete this brief form, as soon as possible by April 15th.

The Data Help Desk is happening virtually for the first time after several successful in-person events at professional meetings over the last few years at the AGU Fall Meeting, the Ecological Society of America Annual Meeting, the Ocean Sciences Meeting, and more. Don't miss this chance to help others with data-related questions and to demo your tool or platform!

Questions? Please contact megancarter at esipfed.org.

Best regards & stay healthy,
Peter
