The current draft budget is set to 0 USD for 2026. Use this opportunity to crank it up and get things going in 2026! https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Open_Geoscience_Committee/budget_2026 Best, Peter Gesendet: Donnerstag, 1. I am reaching out because this is the time to prepare a budget for 2026. For the last years, we have applied for similar annual budgets (3000 USD), but didn't manage to use up any on the provided funding: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Open_Geoscience_Committee/budget_2025 https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Open_Geoscience_Committee/budget_2024 https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Open_Geoscience_Committee/budget_2023 If anyone of you all has plans for open-geoscience related activities which can be supported by OSGeo funding in 2026, please do speak up before January 9th 2026, so we can submit a budget request matching these activities. In case that no actions are in preparation for 2026, I propose to adjust our annual budget plan and apply for a budget of _zero_ USD for 2026, so OSGeo doesn't have to earmark budget which can be put to use elsewhere. Let's discusss ! Any thoughts are welcome. I think it would be nice, still, to have a reserved budget. Maybe to make a sprint code to develop some educational material or give a short course at some conference and support part of the costs? Or produce some communication material? I propose to ask for 2.5k for 2026. A call for budget requests was placed via the open geoscience mailing list on January 1st with a deadline/reminder on January 9th. Until now, no requests for budget have been placed. Unfortunately, I won't be able to participate in the preparation and execution of the annual OSGeo Open Geoscience Event at EGU 2026, and therfore will not request funding for the EGU effort. Therefore, the budget request from the Open Science Committee is zero USD for 2026: https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Open_Geoscience_Committee/budget_2026 Hopefully we'll see renewed activity in the Committee in 2027. At our OSGeo session, last year we suffered low numbers (but very good discussion!) also because we had some parallel townhalls speaking about LLMs and AI. We can start from there an go with something like: Open Geoscience: Free Open Source Software, Reproducible Science and AI. Open geoscience combines free open source software and geospatial libraries with reproducible research workflows, allowing scientists to share complete analytical pipelines alongside their findings. AI and machine learning enter this game, with LLMs enabling local deployment of large language models for geoscientific tasks, and frameworks like TensorFlow allow researchers to analyze vast geological datasets. What is the perspective in terms of sustainable science practice for students and professionals? As usual, it will be an informal and open-to-discussion meeting! Let me know if someone is supporting organizing this session at EGU2026, we still have few days to submit the proposal for session.
