I should add: Firebug Lite doesn't need to ship with OpenLayers.  Debug 
mode can be triggered by pointing to any firebug.js script (such as 
http://www.getfirebug.com/firebug/firebug.js).

The meat of the patch for #507 is at the bottom of

for readme.txt and below.
