Could you take a look at #728: "Control.SelectFeature: send the mouse
event to the callback functions" http://trac.openlayers.org/ticket/728,
and tell me if it makes sense to add this?

I feel like a sane use case is presented in the ticket, but I want to
know if there's supposed to be a better way to do this, and if there's
not, should we maybe add evt data to all the callbacks? 

(Either way, the patch is going to need tests before it goes in, I
think, but I want to evaluate the sanity of the approach before we go
farther with that.)
