I'd like to get the latter into 2.6 either way. With that in mind, I
would say that getting the former in makes for an easier (two step)
review, and also lets us get trunk testing on the current code without
waiting for the more invasive changes. 

However, if this is sidetracking or backtracking, it would be better to
simply move forward, and go for the full patch.
