[OpenLayers-Dev] git clone of OpenLayers

Hi

I would like to create a standalone or intranet app using openlayers for
peeps in places where there is no internet access. OpenLayers.js has a
number of external references for things like the img attributes for
standard controls so I need to duplicate all those items. I'm thinking
cloning may help.

OSGeo says, at http://trac.osgeo.org/openlayers/wiki/HowToDownload, to use
git to clone openlayers but github.com says No No No!

[root at localhost openlayers]# git clone
https://github.com/openlayers/openlayers
Cloning into 'openlayers'...
fatal: Unable to find remote helper for 'https'

What is a remote helper for https?
