Could you post an example of the WFS request string (eg from the NET 
panel in firebug) that the request generates?

I havent actually used the getFeature control - I use DrawFeature and in 
the featureadded, construct a filter and then read the protocol with 
that filter - I generally want a lot of control of the request. However, 
getFeature should work.
