[OpenLayers-Dev] case restrictions for use of EPSG codes

I have seen a number of examples where unknowledgeable coders have created their map projection or assigned layer projections using something like "epsg:3857" and thought this was working.
>From what I have seen, this is not supported by Open Layers and seems to do nothing.   A transform, for example, between EPSG:4326 and epsg:3857 returns the identical input coordinates.

Is there a reason for this being case sensitive?
