Comment:

 This does not seem trunk ready to me, mostly because of the amount of
 (class) "duplication".

 I would also advise to split up this patch in smaller parts to make it
 more manageable.

 E.g., is it not possible to have lock support in the current Format.WFST,
 if not can you please explain why this was not possible?
