 I've noticed a similar problem with significant lag when dragging the map,
 where overlays move way faster than the google maps background layer.

 I've looked at (and starred) the issue, but it's currently closed and also
 marked as a duplicate of [http://code.google.com/p/gmaps-api-
 issues/issues/detail?id=2346 this issue], which is also closed and
 presumably fixed.  Perhaps this needs to be reported in a new issue?  I
 think it will be overlooked by the gmaps-api project in its current state.
