 Andreas, I've done experiments in several browsers, including mobile
 browsers. Positioning tiles using "%" as opposed to "px" doesn't seem to
 reduce pan performance.

 I used the mobile.html for testing: http://goo.gl/6iZ0O ("%") and
 http://goo.gl/9eJeD ("px") for testing. I'd be cool if others can test
 these URLs and report back.
