 Thanks @erilem for the question about setTimeout in the clear function -
 it made me realize that we need to clean up our own listeners earlier and
 only defer the releaseTile call to the GMaps API. I just uploaded
 [attachment:openlayers-3430.5.patch] which fixes this.
