 This patch is only good for altering the geometry in place. You could do
 this any time, even before rendering. Are you aware of context based
 styling and custom symbols? See http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/styles-
 context.html and http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/graphic-name.html.
