Comment:

 Thanks @speicus for the pointer. In this case I'm closing the ticket as
 invalid. The fix is to contact mapbox and make them turn
 theme/dark/blank.gif into a valid transparent 1x1 pixel gif - it is
 currently a white 1x1 pixel gif.
