 The new patch (V2) is functionally the same but made up2date with the
 latest OL version (2.11/trunk). It is by far not ready yet, just a
 snapshot of where I'm at atm.

 Attempts have been made to make it work with SVG2, but failed so far. It
 still works with Canvas, SVG and VML.

 It looks like #3503 is a duplicate.
