[OpenLayers-Users] events destroy does not work

Guys,

I need to activate a map event for interactive data collection of markers
into a database. In order to not conflict with other mouse events I want to
have the click event active temporarily while the user selects the location
for the point completes a form and then on submission deactivates the event.
I tried OpenLayers.Events.destroy(); to do this but FF says this is not a
function. I am using http://openlayers.org/api/2.4-rc1/OpenLayers.js as my
code base.

Is this not the way to go and if so what is the alternative?
