[OpenLayers-Users] multiple layers in a single request

It appears that if I have a map with five layers, five requests go to
the server (mapserver in my case) even when all of the layers are
coming from the same server. I can see that you can ball multiple
server layers into a single OL layer definition with {layers: L1,
L2...} but they cease to be independent layers in the layer control.
How would you offer the user 10 layers, allow them to turn on as many
as they want, but still only make one request to the server?
