[OpenLayers-Users] adding controls to a map

Hi all,

I want to use openlayers to add zoom in/out and other functionalities to a
map that is retrieved as an image from geoserver.
I mean that I have a map that is returned and put inside img tag and I am
wondering whether I can add some controls and functionalities provided
in openlayer to it.
(I wish that I have posted my question clearly...)
can someone give me some hints or direct me to some examples?
