[OpenLayers-Users] Marker labels without the markers? Client side labelling

In Google Maps I would use Elabels (or I think there was an older 
Tlabels) what would I do in Open labels.

I have noticed some discussion about labels in Open Layers, a couple of
cases where based on Vector Layers .. and the answer was well due to
SVG transforms things were prohibitively difficult.. ..what about with 
markers...no rotation of text or other things that browsers dont really 
support.. can we put labels on the map in place of markers... ???
