There is an item called "Zoomifyer" which you may find interesting. It
consists of a executable that slices the image into tiles at various
zoomlevels, and a Flash app that runs in the browser to pan and zoom
among them. Very slick, though not quite as slick as OL.
Here's an example. Click on a bird, then a photo within the bird's
