How about something more akin to.  Title and Descriptions and Grouping Objects which also have Titles and Description 
emulating the structure of KML, then the Sidebar could be a tree structure which encorporates information about its
nature by way of its structure. Even what are normally single layers could have sub layers and groups... Google Earth Sidebar
