[OpenLayers-Users] change a layer's url

Is it possible to modify a layer's url after it has been added to a
map with map.addLayer()? And similarly, is it possible to dynamically
alter a layer's params?

The things that I am trying to do are:
1. Pass a filter to a MapServer layer, e.g. filter=(id=123)
2. Dynamically change the MapServer layer(s) that comprise an OL layer.

If there is a better way to accomplish these things I'm all ears.
