you are right that its not a solution, but it is enough for me to tell them I have something there, and I can work on the actual solution.  Thanks for the tip!!!

This is definately not a solution to the reason why the tiles are coming up
pink...but the following code makes it look less "error-like"

OpenLayers.Util.onImageLoadErrorColor = "transparent";
