[OpenLayers-Users] change point vector layer graphic?

Is is possible to change the externalGraphic symbol used for
a point symbol on a Vector layer (That is, after it has been
drawn)?  Assigning to the value:

  thefeature.style.externalGraphic = "img/newsymbol.png";

seems to have no effect.  Is there some sort of 'redraw
yourself' function that needs to be called?

Also, is there a way to just turn off one point vector
symbol in a layer (similar to the way icon.display() is used
on a marker)?
