Go with GeoServer's WMS/WFS protocols. Most likely it will save you
tremendous time and lots of teared out hair! :)

OpenLayers, GeoServer and PostGIS is a perfect combination. You will be off
with just a few rows of js-code.  MySQL will probably do if you do not need 
advanced GIS functionality.
