[OpenLayers-Users] postgis queries

I need to zoom to features based on values in a postgis database.   Is it
reasonable to a throw a query at a servlet that queries the database and
returns the extent, which I then zoom to?  I don't want to go this route if
there are easier/better ways to accomplish this.   PHP is not an option.
