Hi,

Not sure if you've had an answer yet, but have a look at this
http://openlayers.org/dev/examples/layerLoadMonitoring.html

that should point you in the right direction.
In addition to that,
http://trac.osgeo.org/openlayers/wiki/Addins/LoadingPanel
is also a nice little add on that adds a progress bar to the layer load.
